Our History

Originally called The Old Alabama Town Herb Society, our organization came about due to the tireless efforts of several herb-loving ladies in Montgomery, Alabama who came together in 1996 to form an official herb group. The group took as part of its mission the care of the single herb garden that existed at Old Alabama Town, a model village of 19th and early 20th century life, developed and maintained by the Landmarks Foundation of Montgomery.

Over the years, Herb Society members designed and maintained four additional herb gardens at Old Alabama Town, and one culinary herb garden at Alabama’s Governor’s Mansion.

Now called the Alabama Herb Society, the group ended its association with Old Alabama Town in 2018. The Society Members continue to volunteer for the Governor’s Mansion Garden and is developing new projects for the Crump Senior Center Garden. It continues, through engagement with local schools and the community at large, to widen knowledge of herbs and foster enjoyment in their cultivation. The Society’s annual Herb Day Festival is a tradition of over 27 years – featuring children’s activities, music, various plant and garden related vendors, and educational programs by herbal experts.

The Alabama Herb Society connects with other organizations that promote sustainable gardening and takes pride in preserving herbal uses that go back centuries. The Society is working to lay the foundation for future generations to reap the benefits of these marvelous plants.
