Work Day in the Gardens

What a wonderful afternoon we had in the OAT gardens. It was fabulous to be working outside after such rotten winter weather. We cut things back, weeded, and applied pine straw. The Dye Garden is complete, the Scent and Children’s Gardens are done except for pine straw, and we got 2 trees planted in Judy’s garden.

We would like to have another workday, Saturday 3 Feb at 1 pm. We will finish weeding, trimming, and strawing the gardens, plant trees and azaleas, and trim the scuppernong vines.

Many thanks to Kayren, Patrick, and Carolyn for their help today. Teamwork makes the dreamwork…J

The ‘Mermaid Marcelline’ was done by the Boy Scout Venturing Crew 23.

The standing blue-shirted farmer guy was made by Tom and his family…kinda looks like Tom.

The Sicke Family (2nd), was done by Jane McCarthy.

The sitting man and dog was done by the Capital City Master Gardeners-Montgomery.

Scarecrows at Old Alabama Town!

Monday morning was an exciting time in the Old Alabama Town Herb Gardens. A beautiful day with many wonderful plants growing in each garden dressed up for fall with blazing colors. Art Adventure in the Gardens this year resulted in some wonderful sculptures designed by many. Judging was completed by Mayor Todd Strange with Capitol City Master Gardener taking first place blue ribbon, Ms Lizzie Turnipseed receiving second place red ribbon, a tie for third place white ribbon went to Elmore County Master Gardner and Ms Jane McCarthy OATHS member, and also an honorable mention ribbon to Eat South. Many thanks to all who participated in this fun filled event.

June Meeting in the Gardens

At the Tuesday evening meeting Jane McCarthy and Ann Hamill conducted the induction ceremony for new officers of Old Alabama Town Herb Society for 2016-2017, using the language of plants for each officer’s purpose. Those present were President Duane “Duck” Mara, Secretary Christine Robinson, and Treasurer Maxine Taylor. After the induction, Jane McCarthy gave a demonstration of propagating plants and a walking tour of the OATHS herb gardens.

Cleanup Day is Saturday

This coming Saturday, April 9th, 8:00am until 12:00 is a clean-up and plant day for OATHS members in the Herb gardens at Old Alabama Town to get the Gardens in top shape for the up-coming events that will be held in Old Alabama Town. Bring your garden tools and be ready to enjoy sprucing up the gardens, planting some new plants, and the company of other OATHS members. We won’t be there too long and if you want to bring a friend, feel free.

Garden Workday Help Needed

CAM01585 Assistance is needed for this Saturday, Nov. 28th, 8am to noon. Our garden work day objectives are to remove the scarecrows and store them in the Carriage House loft and then tidy up the gardens. See you Saturday with working jeans and gloves on!

Sprinklers are working!

The sprinklers are working again! One important mission of the Old Alabama Town Herb Society is to maintain the herb gardens at Old Alabama Town. Jane McCarthy, Kayren Pittman and other members on the garden team met with plumbers to see that repairs were made to the sprinkler system in the herb gardens. The main culprit was damage from a tent stake, but it was time for some much needed maintenance and updates.
